Recent work – progress of a school mural

Big City provided a school mascot mural recently for Hutchinson Middle School in La Mirada, near Los Angeles in southern California. The client wanted their mascot, the hawk, hand painted in a very large graphic, or what we call supergraphics, making a very impactful impression. (I speculated that they thought about using it for discipline – they could threaten to feed unruly children to it, but that’s just my odd way of thinking…)

The project started in the shop – after settling on a design, a photo was traced to create the 12 colors that would be used. That electronic file in vector format could then be drawn out on the plotter to create the paper pattern for transferring the design.

Then it was on to the project location. After preparing the wall and the windows the graphic would be painted over, the base coat was painted.

Over the next few days, the tedious task of painting in the little blocks of color proceeded. The work began to develop, and the kids at the school really enjoyed watching the progress.

And finally, it was finished. Here is the result:

Recent work – Promenade at Downey – THE VULTEE ARCHIVES AND HISTORY MUSEUM

Recently Big City was given the task of reproducing the Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation logo on the building front of an upcoming museum. The Promenade at Downey retail development in Downey (near Los Angeles, California), was built on property that was used by this company in Downey’s rich history in the Aerospace industry.

The project included making the logo look like it had been weathered and aged – in a “ghost sign” style. Got to love that corrugated metal, too. Here are some progress photos, and the final result.

First, a beautiful tile floor logo that remains inside the building – this is what the project was based on:

On the outside of the building, then, here is how our instant-aged logo developed:

After everything was finished, I went back and got this photo:

Recent work: Vinavanti Urban Winery, San Diego CA — painted signage

In San Diego’s Hillcrest neighborhood, this sign painter was asked to provide sign painting and interior graphics for the new facility of our client Vinavanti Urban Winery. We wish them the best of success.

One enjoyable moment for me was to be able to listen in to the front-of-house orientation meeting while working inside on the “local wine at its purest” wall. The owner/entrepreneur leading the project and the meeting, Eric Van Drunen, is so knowledgable in his craft, just by working nearby I felt like I was sitting in on a professor’s Q and A.

Here are a few photos from the project:
